Constructive Drawing

The brief of this project was to create a relief/ 3D landscape of the embankment using neutral colours and given materials; card, paper and paint, however limited to only black & white.

Sketchbook work

We begun this project by doing numerous sketches along the embankment, quick landscapes to gain information rather than detailed drawings.

Forming our composition to create followed, and experimenting with the various materials which were available to create textures. I personally enjoyed using the paint as shown below, where I used the edge of cardboard to blot and drag paint.

To help influence our ideas we also did some research into contemporary artists, including John Virtue and Daniela Gullota.

My final piece, shown below features a large tree in the foreground, a building behind as a mid-ground and roof of the chapel in the background. I was trying to create a composition with a large single subject foreground along with a distance background to demonstrate perspective however the size of each part of my composition or lack of a flat plain background hasn't worked. I tried to connect/ join the composition by using a path, however due to it's proportion and direction it doesn't fit in well.

Final Piece

I painted the building using black and white paints only, however rather than using a paintbrush I dragged the paint with cardboard. I think I focused too much on mixing colours that there isn't enough contrast of tone on the building to look three dimensional.

I created a collage of paper and cardboard to create the tree texture. This part of my drawing I am pleased with, as the tears have created a suitable texture to replicate the bark of a tree.

Photography

Our first tutorial on photography included being taught the rule of thirds and experimenting with various angles, and lighting. Afterwards, using adobe photoshop we edited our photos, using tools such as layers, colour balance, curves and filters.

In both these photos the black and white adjustment were used to create a greater contrast and more dramatic appearance along with curves.

I used repetitive layers of both the above and below photos, changing the opacity to create a blur.

I used a distort filter which pulled this image further, complimenting it's horizontal lighting with a silhouette figure.

This photo was a reflection in the river which I rotated and altered the colour balance to make much more brighter and radiant.

Posterize and brightness/ contrast helped form this saturated photo, making it less realistic.

Adobe Photoshop Introduction

We began by adding text to images.

Followed by cropping a section of the photo using the magnetic lasso tool  and editing those areas, specifically Angelina Jolie's lip and eyes colour.

In the third part, we cropped figures from different photos and pasted them into others. Changing the opacity of the layers, I chose hard light to create translucent figures.

To combine all the skills learned, we were commissioned to create a B-Movie Poster. We were limited to what images we could use which were relevant to the title and synopsis of the B-movie, however I like the repetition of the posterized ants. Although, we would have liked to add something into the background as it is a little empty.
The choice of font also seems relevant, and being able to change it's angle and curve added intensity to the title.
